High School Football Coach Told He Scored Too Much In 60-0 Victory, So He Quit Because He Ain't Down With That Soft Ass Shit
Devin Dourisseau was an assistant coach at La Joya Community High for the past seven years. After the 2018 season, he was given the head coaching role for the Arizona high school.
His first two games were less than stellar. He lost 75-35 and 47-7. He turned the ship around in game 3, winning 63-7 and continued it in game 4, winning 60-0. A great turnaround that any administration would most likely be happy with. Turns out that the folks at La Joya Community High were not happy. At all.
SOURCE-This past weekend, during their 60-0 win over Copper Canyon, Dourisseau told AZ Central that he was threatened to be removed from the sideline if they scored another point in the contest. Reflecting on the game, Dourisseau shared that they scored a special teams touchdown and two defensive scores in the second half, and his first team offense only scored once. After that they ran the ball with his second and third team guys and continued to score.
Okay, so it sounds like Coach Dourisseau wasn’t throwing four verticals with his starters up 53-0 in the 2nd half. There’s not much you can do except put in your 2nd/3rd string players when destroying the opponent. I’d argue that it’s more disrespectful to take a knee for the entire 4th quarter than hand it off up the middle.
After that conversation with administration earlier this week, where Dourisseau was told he was in the wrong, he felt it was best to step away.
The opposing coach from last week’s game, Sean Freeman at Copper Canyon said after the game everything seemed normal and added that he was surprised when he heard Dourisseau was out as head coach.
“To me, it was not that big a deal. We just got beat fair and square. It’s football. And if you’re not showing up with your A game that’s what happens.”
I respect Dourisseau’s decision. I’ve always hated the concept of “running up the score,” especially in high school. Kids train all year round for 10-14 games. Telling them they can’t play because the other team isn’t on your level isn’t their fault. As Herm Edwards once said, you play to win the game. You don’t play to make sure the other team’s feelings are intact after there is 0:00 on the clock in the 4th. If you are the other team and don’t want to lose 77-0, be better. Aren’t we are supposed to be teaching lessons in high school?
